Coordinator - HIV Prevention Program for Black Gay/Bi Men

The Coordinator will assist in planning several aspects of an HIV/AIDS prevention program for young Black gay/bisexual men between the ages of 18 and 29 in Dallas. The community-based, peer-run community-building and HIV prevention program is an innovative and evolving program that includes a combination of peer-led small group safer sex workshops, peer outreach and publicity. The essence of the program is community building, community mobilization and empowerment--creating a community that mobilizes the young Black gay/bisexual men to encourage each other to practice safer sex and to get tested for HIV frequently. This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed.

This position will focus on four major tasks:

  • Using graphic arts, design and create materials (both online and on paper/posters) to publicize the project and project-sponsored events, and to promote safer sex and HIV testing.
  • Ensuring the distribution of such materials at venues throughout the community.
  • Conducting outreach at venues that attract young Black, gay/bisexual men and at project-sponsored events.
  • Creating social outreach events to attract young Black gay/bisexual men to the project and which address their diverse needs.

 

 

Responsibilities:
- Developing event and safer sex promotional materials to be used in outreach activities for general publicity, weekly events, large events, safer sex outreach, special forums, monthly calendars and online graphic content – and other materials as needed/requested by project staff and Core Group.
- Recruiting volunteers to participate in one of two teams, including (1) the Publicity Team and (2) the Outreach Team, as well as coordinating the teams. The Publicity Team will help to develop the publicity, safer sex, and HIV testing materials and ensure the placement of these materials around the Dallas area including the counties Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro, and Rockwall.. The Outreach Team will participate in the design and preparation of outreach activities, and the Coordinator will train and supervise young gay/bisexual men to participate in peer outreach activities at venues attracting other young men.
- Organizing and running weekly outreach planning meetings.
- Providing materials in a form ready for upload to Facebook, Twitter, and email and printing materials. - Submitting all materials in time for review and approval.
- Acting as a liaison between the project and community members who (a) manage venues where publicity and other materials can be distributed and/or posted, and (b) manage or run venues where outreach can be conducted.
- Co-facilitating small groups.
- Working with Core Group volunteers to obtain feedback on publicity, outreach, and events
- Attending project staff meetings.
- Participating in community meetings.
- Keeping records of outreach activities.
- Assisting with other project events and activities (e.g., working with Core Group, maintaining project space, conducting community outreach) as needed.
- Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor/manager and research/technical assistance team. -

Lifting Requirements: At least 20-50 pounds.

Skills, knowledge and abilities necessary:

Required:

  • Experience in graphic arts and design.
  • At least 1.5 years of college, as documented through college transcripts.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Understanding of the needs of young Black gay/bisexual men.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with MS Office, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, Adobe Photoshop (Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Flexibility; able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Comfortable discussing sex and sexual behavior.

Preferred:

  • Own a vehicle.
  • Previous experience working with Black gay men.
  • Excellent social skills.
  • Knowledgeable about gay male sexuality, Black male issues, and HIV prevention with young men. Performing arts background.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
